A Doctor's Approach to Spinal Health

Dr. Sophia Lam graduated with honors from the University of Bridgeport School of Chiropractic — one of the leading Doctor of Chiropractic programs in the United States. Her clinical philosophy is built on four words she repeats to every patient: rigorous, precise, systematic, professional.

She founded Sophia Lam Chiropractic, P.C. (焯然脊醫治療坊) to serve patients in Bayside and across the greater Queens community who want lasting relief from back, neck, joint, and nerve pain — without medication, injections, or surgery as a first option.

Every new patient begins with a detailed posture, range-of-motion, and neurological assessment. Treatment is then matched to the diagnosis: hands-on spinal adjustment, computerized decompression, shockwave therapy, or a combination.

Introducing Dr. Sophia Lam, D.C.

How she explains the spine — and why a precise, hands-on adjustment matters.

Why the Spine — and Why Hands-on Care

The spine is more than a stack of bones. It protects the nervous system that controls every organ, muscle, and sensation in the body. When a single vertebra shifts out of its normal position — even by a few millimeters — the surrounding nerve roots can become irritated, and the consequences range from local back pain to radiating sciatica, numbness, headaches, and dizziness.

Dr. Lam explains the spine to every new patient using a model like the one shown here. Patients leave their first visit knowing exactly which vertebral level is involved, why it hurts, and what the plan is to fix it.

  • Plain-language explanation of your diagnosis
  • Hands-on adjustment, not high-volume table assembly
  • Treatment matched to the segment — not a generic protocol

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions our front desk hears most often — answered here so you can plan your visit with confidence.

About Chiropractic Care

What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a manual technique that applies a controlled, targeted force to a specific spinal joint that has lost its normal range of motion. The goal is to restore alignment, improve mobility, and relieve nearby nerve compression. Each adjustment is selected based on your spinal anatomy and presenting complaint.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Performed by a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic on appropriate candidates, spinal adjustment is a low-risk, well-studied therapy. The most common after-effect is mild soreness lasting a few hours — similar to mild exercise soreness. Dr. Lam screens every new patient for the specific conditions where adjustment is not recommended.
Does adjustment hurt?
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick pressure followed by release. Some experience mild post-treatment soreness. Sharp pain during the adjustment itself is not normal — if anything feels wrong, the technique can be adjusted or stopped.
What is the "cracking" sound?
The audible release some patients hear is called cavitation — a small gas bubble in joint fluid changes pressure and releases. It is not the sound of bones cracking, and it is not required for an effective adjustment. Some chiropractic techniques are completely silent.

Treatment Plans & Sessions

How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the condition, severity, and how long it has been present. Acute strains may resolve in a handful of visits; chronic, long-standing problems usually require a structured plan with re-evaluation checkpoints. After your initial assessment, you'll receive a clear plan rather than open-ended visits.
How long does a typical session take?
A follow-up adjustment session usually takes 20–30 minutes. Spinal decompression sessions take 25–35 minutes. Shockwave therapy sessions are typically 10–20 minutes. Your first visit (full assessment + first treatment) is longer.
Do I need imaging (X-ray / MRI) before I come?
Not necessarily. Many conditions can be evaluated clinically at your first visit. If imaging is warranted based on the exam, Dr. Lam will tell you and help you arrange it before treatment begins.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows free movement of your neck, back, and limbs. You'll remain fully clothed for adjustment and decompression sessions.
